About Baycrest

The Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care was officially established in 1967 but the facility and staff have been been caring for many patients for much longer. Baycrest has grown into a global leader for development and innovations of aging and brain health.

Specialties

Baycrest is an academic health sciences centre affiliated with the University of Toronto. However, their services are patient-focused and include a hospital, long-term care, residential and community-based programs and outpatient medical clinics, designed for people over the age of 50.

Medical Research

The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a leading international centre of the study of brain function.

Their primary research focus is on memory and the executive (frontal lobe) functions of the brain, both in normal aging and in the presence of diseases and conditions which affect the brain, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimers disease and other dementias.

Funding

The Baycrest Foundation, made possible in part through private donations and business matching, contributes in large part to the continuation and improvement of services at Baycrest. They have other funding programs, as well, such as Barrie2Baycrest bike ride in September of 2013, which raised $1.1 million.

Affiliations

Baycrest’s main affiliation lays with the University of Toronto. Other partnerships include Crestwood, The Royal Conservatory, Ontario Arts Council, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and OCAD University.
