It’s Time to Celebrate
Let’s take a look at some ways you can plan a happy holiday season with elderly loved ones:
Have Realistic Expectations
One way to quickly ruin the holidays is to set the expectations too high for your family. That’s especially important when older adults are involved.
For example, if your loved one has limited mobility, do not plan activities that require a lot of walking. Instead, bring the holiday celebrations to him or her. Cooking/baking, making holiday crafts and solving puzzles are all great activities to do with loved ones over the holidays that can be done with very little movement.
Set the Table With Healthy Eating in Mind
Does your loved one have any dietary restrictions or issues with swallowing?
The holidays seem to be centered around food. As a result, if there are certain items your loved one cannot eat or has trouble eating, it can cause frustration during the holidays.
Therefore, consider what your loved one is and isn’t allowed to eat. Also, try to make the meals as healthy as possible by choosing lean proteins for the main dishes, as well as making substitutions whenever possible to reduce sugar and sodium intake.
Make It a Holiday to Remember
Remember the true meaning of the holidays”togetherness. You want to take time to just sit and be with your loved ones, whether that means starting a new holiday tradition or sharing stories of favorite holiday memories from years past.
The holiday season can get pretty crazy. Therefore, do what you can to create memories with your loved ones and not let the moments pass you by!
