Is it time for home care?
There is rarely one moment when the answer becomes obvious. More often, small changes add up: a shower feels less safe, meals are skipped, more reminders are needed. If someone always has to be there, that matters. Look at the caregiver too. Help can start with a few hours a week.
What types of care are available?
In the United States, home care helps with everyday living, home health is skilled medical care ordered by a provider, and hospice focuses on comfort near the end of life. In Canada, families weigh publicly funded home care, private home care and palliative care. In both countries, these services can work together.
What should I do after a fall?
After a fall, the priorities are checking for injury, understanding why it happened, and making the home safer. Most falls have more than one cause, so a quick review of medications, footwear, lighting and routines usually turns up something fixable.
How do I prevent caregiver burnout?
Burnout builds slowly: you feel tired even after rest, impatient, or always on duty. These feelings don’t mean you love someone less. They may mean caregiving has outgrown the support you have. Linda suggests three ways to lighten the load: release your feelings, reconnect with yourself, and reach out so others can take on what doesn’t need you.
How do I have hard conversations with family?
Hard conversations go better when they start early, focus on what your loved one wants, and happen more than once. Lead with a worry you’ve noticed, not a decision you’ve made. You don’t need to settle everything in one talk. Aim for one next step.
How do I get organized?
When several people share care, details get lost. One binder with medications, symptom logs, appointment notes and contacts means anyone who steps in, whether family, a caregiver or a nurse, knows what to do. Start with the pages you need most and add the rest over time.
