Ways to Prevent Falls in Older Adults

Did you know that one in four seniors 65 years of age and older who are living in the United States fall at least once each year? These falls, in turn, can lead to injuries and even death.

Therefore, our team of in-home care providers at Qualicare Big Sky wants to help you keep your loved one safe from falls. Read on as we take a look at the issue.

Is Your Loved One at Risk for Falling?

While a fall can happen to anyone, older Americans are at a higher risk of falling for a number of reasons, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Illness
  • Lower body weakness
  • Balance issues
  • Certain medications
  • Vision problems
  • Foot pain
  • Limited mobility

However, medical conditions are not the only reason a fall might occur. Something as simple as a rug or clutter on the floor can cause an elderly loved one to slip or fall. Therefore, when it comes to lowering the fall risk of your loved one, it is important to also consider environmental factors, too!

Preventing Falls at Home

Fall prevention starts with you! Let’s take a look at some ways you can help prevent falls from happening at your loved one’s home:

First, you want to make sure you clean up any clutter that is on the floors or stairs. In addition, you want to remove anything that could be considered a trip hazard, such as a rug on the floor or cords running along the floor.

Second, make sure that hallways, stairways and rooms are well-lit so that you are easily able to see your surroundings, including what is right in front of you. Wearing non-slip shoes or socks can also help to prevent falls among older adults.

Finally, install handrails or grab bars in strategic areas of the home, including along both sides of any stairs and in the bathrooms. These can be helpful in assisting your loved one when moving around.
