Understanding Fall Risk in Older Adults
No one wants to think about their loved one falling. But falls are the leading cause of emergency room visits for older adults, who are at an increased fall risk for a variety of reasons.
Our team of in-home care providers at Qualicare Newmarket wants to share some insight into the factors that increase falls risk”and how to limit the risk.
Why Do Falls Occur?
While aging itself puts us at an increased risk of falls, there are a number of other factors that go along with it:
First, its important to consider the medical conditions your loved one has. Certain medical conditions can increase the risk of falls, including:
- Anemia or other blood disorders
- Arthritis
- Chronic pain
- Dehydration
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- Foot disorders
- Frailty
- Hearing problems
- Low blood pressure
- Muscle weakness in legs
- Parkinsons disease
- Thyroid problems
- Urinary incontinence
- Vertigo
- Vitamin D deficiency
Second, you need to make sure you discuss your loved ones fall risk with his or her physician. Because most older adults take multiple medications, they often take at least one med thats associated with dizziness or unsteadiness, both risk factors for fall.
If theres a medication prescribed to your loved one that puts him or her at a higher fall risk, talk with a doctor or physician about potential alternatives.
Finally, if your loved one has already fallen once, he or she is at a higher risk of falling again. Lower that risk by removing fall hazards from the home environment.
Remove clutter, particularly from the floor. Make sure rugs and carpets are properly adhered the floor. Install handrails along the stairs and in the bathroom, and make sure all areas of the home are well-lit.
