Stop a Stroke in its Tracks!
According to the Ontario Stroke Network, stroke is the leading cause of adult disability among Canadians, as well as the third leading cause of death. Our in-home care providers at Qualicare – North York want to provide a few practical tips to help you and your loved one reduce your risk of suffering from a stroke.
Lower Your Risk of Stroke
Lets check out ways you can help yourself and your loved one lower the risk of suffering from a stroke now and in the future.
For starters, if you or your loved one smoke, stopping smoking needs to be a top priority. In fact, smoking is the number one risk factor for a stroke. Therefore, it is vital to quit smoking to help prevent a stroke from occurring.
Second, decreasing your sodium intake can also help to reduce your risk factor for stroke. A high intake of salt can lead to high blood pressure that, in turn, can lead to an increased risk of stroke. Most medical professionals recommend limiting your sodium intake to around 2300 mg a day. However, if you are over the age of 51, the number is lowered to 1500 mg per day.
Finally, exercise can help keep your arteries strong and your stroke risk down. If you sit most of the day, make it a point to get up and get moving periodically throughout the day ” even if it is just taking a walk around the house!
