Get a Strategy in Place for Fall Prevention
According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. One in three older adults fall at least once each year.
Fortunately, falls are also largely preventable, which is why our team of in-home care providers at Qualicare Big Sky want to offer some tips on how to limit fall risk.
Up Your Fall Prevention Game
As we age, fall risk increases for a variety of reasons, ranging from diminished mobility and balance to the use of certain medications. But there are steps you can take to lower that risk:
First, if your loved one is taking any medications, he or she needs to know the side effects and if those side effects could put him or her at an increased risk of falls. Talk with a doctor or pharmacist about your loved ones medication regimen and any meds that could cause dizziness or unsteadiness.
Second, your loved one needs to still be physical active every day to improve muscle strength and balance. When your loved one becomes inactive, he or she is losing muscle strength, which can make it easier for your loved one to suffer from a fall.
Any type of activity from walking around the neighborhood to tai chi can help build muscle and improve mobility and flexibility in your loved one, which can, in turn, help your loved one prevent falls.
Finally, you want to make sure your loved ones home is free from clutter. Look for anything on the floor or in another location that could present a potential tripping hazard. This includes not only clutter but also cords and rugs that arent adhered properly to the floor.
