Signs of hypoglycemia (low blood glucose)

  • Cold, clammy or sweaty skin
  • Pallor
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Shakiness, lack of coordination (e.g. deterioration in writing or printing skills)
  • Irritability, hostility and poor behaviour
  • A staggering gait
  • Fatigue
  • Nervousness
  • Excessive Hunger
  • Headche
  • Blurred vision and dizziness
  • Abdominal pain or nausea
  • Fainting and unconsciousness

Sign of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose)

  • Increased thirst
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue (weak, tired feeling)
  • Weight loss

Steps in Insulin Administration

1. Wash hands.

2. Mix insulin by either rolling between hands or by turning bottle slowly up and down. Do not shake.

3. Remove paper protector from needle and twist onto insulin pen.

4. Twist dial clockwise to measure appropriate dose of insulin.

5. Confirm insulin dose with doctor’s order to ensure administration of the right dose and type of insulin.

Giving the Insulin

1. Select site and clean skin. Pinch skin up into a mound.

2. While holding barrel, insert needle at 90 degree angle (straight in). Make sure the needle is in all the way. If you are thin, you may need to inject at a 45 degree angle. Discuss this with your nurse.

3. Push plunger slowly all the way down.

4. Release the pinched skin, count to five slowly and pull the needle straight out by holding the syringe by the barrel.

5. Press alcohol swab over injection site and wipe. (Do not rub area).

6. Properly dispose of syringe in a sharps container.
