Could Your Eating Habits Use a Boost?

Healthy eating is essential for people of all ages. But eating a healthy and balanced diet presents different challenges as we get older.

In recognition of National Nutrition Month, our in-home care professionals at Qualicare want to give you some tips on how you can eat better for a longer, healthier and happier life!

Eating Right for Life

When it comes to eating right for your life, there are certain factors that need to be considered.

You need to make sure you are filling your plate with a full range of nutrients. Aim to eat the rainbow—otherwise known as filling your plate with foods of a variety of colors. That will help ensure you’re getting plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Supplement those fruits and veggies with whole grains and lean protein sources, like chicken and fish. Fish have the added bonus of also containing omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation in the body and help prevent conditions such as dementia, arthritis and heart disease.

You also want to limit your consumption of certain types of foods, including those with added sugars, excess sodium and saturated fats.

If fruits and vegetables are not your favorite cup of tea, experiment and try as many as you can—preparing them in a variety of different ways to tantalize your taste buds. They’re packed with essential nutrients, so it’s worth experimenting until you find some you like best!

Don’t Forget to Exercise

While healthy eating is an important component to a healthy life, you also want to make sure that you are exercising most days of the week, too!

Aim to get in at least 30 minutes of movement on most days of the week, choosing activities that get your heart rate up, strengthen your muscles and improve your balance.
