Causes of Falls Among the Elderly
As we age, our fall risk increases. And while thats natural, there are ways you can help limit your fall risk.
Our team of in-home care providers at Qualicare Toronto South wants to offer some insight into what increases fall risk”and how to lower that risk.
What Will Increase My Chances of Falling?
Age is a main factor in fall risk. However, there are medical reasons that older Canadians are more likely to suffer a fall, including:
- Dementia
- Heart disease
- Labyrinthitis
- Low blood pressure
- Muscle weakness
- Osteoporosis
- Poor vision
- Vertigo
In addition to health conditions, there are some outside factors that can also cause your loved one to suffer a fall, such as:
- Carpet
- Dim lighting
- Polished, slippery or wet floors
- Rugs
- Stairs
Fortunately, many falls can be prevented with a few simple measures.
Preventing Falls
First, make sure you dont have any fall hazards lurking in your loved ones home. If he or she mostly walks one path, then make sure this path is especially clear of any debris.
Also, make sure all commonly used items are placed within reach so that your loved one doesnt have to move around more than he or she needs to.
Second, make sure all rugs and carpets are properly adhered to the floor. If they have loose corners or are coming up around the sides, they present possible tripping hazards.
Finally, you also want to make sure your loved one is wearing the best footwear around the house to stay safe. While socks and slippers are comfortable, they can put your loved one at a higher risk of falling. Therefore, it is best to stick to non-skid, durable shoes whenever possible.
