10 Ways for Seniors to Stay Cool
Man, is it ever hot out there!
Seniors are especially vulnerable to heat related illness.
Let’s protect them with these 10 tips:
10 ways for seniors to stay cool in hot weather:
- Encourage them to drink plenty of cool water (or flavored water, whatever gets them motivated to drink!) throughout the day (don’t wait until they feel thirsty!) and avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Eat cooling snacks like homemade popsicles or fruit (slightly frozen grapes are great!)
- Eat light, cold meals like chicken or pasta salad instead of heavy, hot dishes like pot roast
- Place a cool washcloth on the back of the neck and keep a pan of cool water close by to periodically re-cool the towel
- Get the fan going! Moving that air around really helps.
- Keep the house as cool as possible by keeping shades closed during the hottest part of the day
- Make sure they wear layers of lightweight clothing in light colored cotton so it’s easy to adjust to the temperature throughout the day by removing or adding layers
- Visit a public cooling center like a recreation center, senior center, library, coffee shop, or shopping mall
- Help them take a cool shower, bath, or washcloth wipe-down. For maximum cooling, keep the water just below body temperature.
- This kind of heat seems to come around every summer! So, if possible, consider buying an indoor air conditioning unit or contact a local air conditioning store or chain store like Rent-A-Center to find out about their rental options.
