About St. Joseph’s

Founded in 1921, St. Joe’s was started to provide health care in the west end of Toronto. It began teaching nursing students in the ’50’s and in the past 5 years, underwent a multi-million dollar redevelopment project, introducing their newest wing, the Our Lady of Mercy patient care wing.

Started and supported by the Sisters of St. Joseph, the health centre is a Catholic teaching hospital that includes family birthing, mental health, and surgery services. They also have a walk-in clinic connected to the hospital, Just for Kids, staffed seven days per week by peadatricians.

Because it is a teaching hospital and its vision is to become the best community teaching hospital in Canada, St. Joe’s is a full service hospital, including the following clinical programs:

• Diagnostics & therapeutics
• Interprofessional practice

Education

Education is a key component to St. Joseph’s programs and services. From elementary students to professional nursing students and beyond, St. Joe’s strives to provide a positive learning environment.

As an organization, we believe that by learning with, from and about each other in an intentional and collaborative manner, we can leverage individual and team capacities to support the delivery of exceptional quality and service.

Funding

Along with the St. Jospeh’s Health Centre Foundation, the hospital is supported largely by Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care grants, OHIP and third parties, and commercial revenues. From donations to the Foundation, they recently acquired an Endo-Bronchial Ultrasound device that allows thoratic surgeons to pinpoint lung cancer and other conditions without surgery, allowing patients to begin treatment sooner.

As with any hospital, St. Joe’s has many affiliations. Some of those include the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Parkdale Community Health Centre, and Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC).
